Support Seniors & Bridge the Intergenerational Gap - Building Connections Across Generations
The Ypsilanti Senior Center has been a beloved gathering place for Washtenaw County seniors for over 60 years. As our community evolves, we're embracing an exciting shift towards intergenerational programming. This approach has proven invaluable in supporting older adults and fostering a sense of purpose.
At the start of the pandemic programs at the center were halted unless only making various issues worse across generations. The negative impact that COVID-19 brought upon both our seniors and youth includes social isolation, increase mental health problems, food insecurity and health wellness disparities.
By 2030, nearly one in four Michigan residents will be 60 or older. We're proactively addressing this demographic shift by creating a welcoming space where seniors, children, and young adults can connect, learn from each other, and build meaningful relationships.
Our Executive Director, Monica Prince, explains, "Intergenerational programming supports older adults in countless ways. Interacting with younger generations helps keep their minds active, reduces feelings of loneliness, and provides a renewed sense of purpose."
